Chapter One
In the world of Osbard, humans lived in fear of monsters.
In this world, humans were near the bottom of the food chain. They constantly lived in fear. No one had the power to fight back against the monsters. Every attempt to subdue monsters ended up in a disaster. Humans were just not strong enough to face them.
Because of this, humanity was close to extinction. All of the kingdoms that humanity built was overwhelmed by monsters, except for one; The Kingdom of Lochwood.
The Goddess who governed Osbard took pity on the poor humans and gave them a gift.
"From now on, every child that is born in this world will receive my blessing. With this, humanity will be able to survive.” The Goddess announced to the remaining humans.
Every child who was born from then on was born with mana. Some had strength far stronger than the average human. Some had speed who surpassed even the fastest of horses. And some had the power to control the elements. With the Goddess's blessing, humanity was able to fight back and expand their horizons.
They were now able to defeat monsters and reclaimed the lands that were once theirs.
Humanity has stabilized. As long as they were careful, monsters were no longer a threat to them. As time went on, the humans who did not receive the Goddess's blessing died out, and so, every single human on Osbard had mana.
Mana became an essential part of humanity's everyday life. Almost everything that humans use was powered by mana. The technology that humans developed all required mana to operate.
As technology developed, people were able to identify the potential strength of a human. A card with the person’s blood would show a persons “Statistics”, or as people called them, “Stats”. Stats were divided into 5 classifications:
Each individual stat is graded, from C as the lowest, to S as the highest. The higher the grade, the better the human’s stat is. The stats also helped tell the person’s affinity to a style of combat, from using different weapons, such as swords, daggers, and bows, to using magic.
Having a C-grade stat means that the stat is the same as the average person. Most people are born with stats that are all C-grade. Having a B-grade stat means that you are more proficient than the average human. Having an A-grade stat means that you are one of the elites, but they are incredibly rare. All of the people with an A-grade stat become well-known people, since they hold incredible power.
An S-grade stat was even rarer than A-grade. So far, only three people were said to have S-grade stat, and each one of them had the power equivalent to a large kingdom’s army.
In the north, inside a huge forest, there lived one of them.
Zephyr Chronis.
At the age of 10, his stats were identified, and every stat was C-grade, except for one…
His Spirit stat was S-grade.
Kingdoms immediately sent scholars to teach the child magic. He was a prodigy. After a few years, he had full control over his enormous mana pool. At the age of 20, all of the Kings from around the world unanimously decided that he is the strongest magician to have ever roamed the lands, and so he was granted the title: “The Grand Wizard”.
Kingdoms tried to win him over in order to ensure their own safety, but he refused each and every one of them. He wanted to be free, and so he roamed the lands, going into dungeons and collecting rare artifacts, which are powerful items that increases a person’s power.
…
“I finally found one.” Zephyr smiled as he stood in front of a huge cave.
“This seems like a large dungeon.” He said with a huge smile on his face. He was clearly happy that he finally found a dungeon.
He opened a small pouch tied on his belt and took out his main gear, which were all artifacts.
He put the gear on and the aura around him immediately changed. He was getting ready for battle.
He started walking into the dungeon. Different kinds of monsters were waiting for him inside. First, he met a small army of goblins, which were all afraid of him. The goblin’s instincts told them that the man before them was not someone they could handle. On top of that, Zephyr’s mask amplified the fear that the goblins felt.
Before him, the goblins couldn’t move out of fear. Zephyr pointed his staff at them.
“Incinerate.”
A huge burst of flames erupted from Zephyr’s staff. The flames were big enough to cover the entire goblin army. Moments later, the flame started dissipating. In its wake, not even the goblin’s corpses remained.
Zephyr continued walking. The next monsters were the same. Orcs, skeletons, zombies, all of them were destroyed. None of them were even able to take a step towards Zephyr.
After walking for a while, he finally reached the end of the dungeon. A huge iron door was in front of him. “Finally… the boss room.” Zephyr sighed in relief. The dungeon was way bigger than he anticipated. Dungeons usually only had one or two types of monsters in them. This was the biggest dungeon he had ever encountered.
“There better be something good here.” He mumbled to himself.
He pointed his staff at the iron door. “Winds, blow.”
A huge gust of wind, powerful enough to be called a typhoon, came into the cave and slammed the iron door open.
Zephyr sighed. “If only I have enough strength to open these doors manually…” He shook his head. Since all his other stats are C-grade, he knew that he was too weak to even attempt to open doors manually.
He walked inside the room. In the room was a huge stone golem. It was around five meters tall. As Zephyr walked towards it, the ground started to shake. The golem was so huge that every movement it made shook the ground.
“Wo
w, I’ve never seen one this big before,'' Zephyr said while genuinely surprised.
The golem raised its foot. It was about to crush Zephyr.
“Wait! If you do that, the entire mountain will crumble!”, Zephyr shouted at the golem.
The golem continued to raise its foot. Since the golem was huge, he was quite slow.
Zephyr sighed as he pointed his staff towards the golem.
The golem’s foot started descending towards him.
“Freeze.” In the blink of an eye, the golem became encased in ice.
“Can’t let you destroy the forest I lived in…” Zephyr mumbled.
He continued walking past the golem.
“There should be an artifact in this dungeon… If not, I’ll be so angry.” Zephyr mumbled once more.
Despite the dungeon being a piece of cake for him, for normal adventurers, it would have taken a few A-grade people to beat it. It was by no means an easy dungeon for adventurers. The difficulty of this dungeon would have been quite high.
Zephyr finally reached the end of the cave. Piles of gold coins were scattered around him, and in the middle of everything, a sword was planted on the ground.
His eyes started shining. He finally found another artifact!
“Finally! My fourth artifact!”, Zephyr happily exclaimed while walking towards the sword.
He put both his hands together, as if he was about to say a prayer. “Goddess! Please! Let this be a good one!”, Zephyr silently prayed towards the Goddess.
Zephyr pointed his staff towards the sword. “Identify.”
A small window appeared in front of him, but the only thing that was written on it was.
-----------------------------
-----------------------------
“What?”, Zephyr was confused. This was the first time his magic didn’t work.
“Identify.”, he tried again, but the result was the same.
He checked his card to see if everything was okay. He seemed to have enough mana to be able to cast a lot of spells, so it seems like mana wasn’t the issue. “Could it be…?” He seemed to have a realization. “Is my magic not powerful enough to identify it…?”
This conclusion was absurd. Zephyr’s magic was known to be the strongest in the entire world. How could it not be able to identify anything? Unless.. “… is it stronger than me…?”
Zephyr’s heart started beating faster.
An artifact that’s stronger than an S-grade adventurer. If one existed, it would make anyone who could wield it unstoppable. He gripped the handle of the sword and tried to pull it out, but it didn’t budge. He slowly kept pouring mana to make the sword move, but it still didn’t budge.
“Unbelievable… to think that the day would come when I would have problems with my mana…” Zephyr said while chuckling. He was glad that there were still things in this world that was still beyond him.
He kept going for a few hours, steadily pouring mana in order to make the sword budge a bit. As he was about to run out of mana, he started to lose hope, but he kept on going, since mana could be easily recovered after resting.
As he poured the last bit of his mana, the sword slowly started to pull out of the ground. Zephyr started using all of his strength to pull it out, and eventually, he succeeded.
He could barely hold the sword with both of his hands. The sword itself was very heavy. The blade was darker than the night. The small bits of light that shone from the cracks above them was reflected on the blade. It is as if it was just cleaned.
Zephyr slowly felt something inside him change. He felt like he was getting stronger. His body felt lighter. He thought his mana was recovering, but as he tried to feel the mana inside him, nothing was there.
As he was admiring the sword, a window identical to the one that popped up when he used identify appeared.
“Transfer succeeded. A new owner has been found.”
Zephyr was confused. He was sure that he didn’t have enough mana to use any magic. He took out his card that showed his stats and his status, but nothing was written on it.
“What the hell…?” Zephyr became even more confused. The status card was always supposed to show the user’s status, but his card was empty.
“How do I check my status now-“
As he said those words, a window suddenly appeared in front of him. The window looked like his status card at first, but when he started reading it, something was not right.
-----------------------------------
------------------------------------
His maximum mana was… 0?
“What the… where did all my mana go…?”
Zephyr’s heart sank. He thought of what could possibly be happening, but no matter how much he thought about it, he only arrived at one conclusion. “Am I... a manaless person?” He looked at the status window in despair.
“There should be some way to reverse thi-“ As he was about to start thinking of a solution, the ground started shaking. Something huge was walking towards him.
“It can’t be…” Zephyr slowly started to realize what was going on.
His magic disappeared, which means that the magic he casted earlier was undone.
In front of him, the golem that he froze earlier was slowly walking towards him.
He pointed his staff towards the golem.
“Freeze… Freeze!”
He kept chanting, but nothing was happening. After a while, the golem was in front of him.
The golem swung its arms towards Zephyr. The golem was too big to avoid, so he instinctively covered himself with his cloak.
Zephyr flew across the room from the impact of the golem’s fists. He coughed blood as soon as he hit the wall. Despite the cloak being impact resistant, it wasn’t enough to block the golem’s powerful blow.
As he tried to stand up, a lot of windows started popping up in front of him. All of them said the same thing.
“Stamina has increased.”
His head started to ache. First he loses his mana, then he gets flung across the room by a golem, and now this? He gave up trying to analyze the situation. He thought of his status window and it popped up in front of him.
“So that’s how it works… how much HP do I have left…?” He mumbled to himself
He was surprised, but not because of the damage he took. He was surprised because his maximum HP increased. “This can’t be… Maximum HP and MP can’t be increased…”
As he kept scanning the status window, he became even more surprised.
“My stamina… increased as well…?” Zephyr couldn’t believe it. In the history of Osbard, not one person was able to increase their stat since birth. He was the first one to have raised a stat.
He wasn’t sure whether he should celebrate or not, because there was still no way he could use magic, and also, the golem was still there, slowly walking towards him.
He started running towards the entrance to the boss room. His running speed was definitely faster than before, and as he kept running, he didn’t seem to be affected by fatigue. The stamina upgrade was no joke.
As he kept running, a window popped up.
“Agility has increased.”
“So that’s how it is…” Zephyr couldn’t help but let out a grin. It seems like actions affiliated to the stat increases it. “I could train my stamina by recovering my HP with potions…” Zephyr thought to himself and came to a conclusion. He grabbed the bag from his waist and tried to retrieve a few bottles of potion, but…
There was nothing in it. The small pouch was empty. He then realized…
“Crap! I don’t have mana!” He wanted to hit himself for being so stupid, but he wasn’t in a situation where c
ould do so. He still had to deal with the golem chasing him.
“If only I had magic or a good weapon, I wouldn’t have to run away…”
As soon as he thought of that, the black sword appeared on his waist. It looked as if it was there all along. It even had a scabbard which was attached to his belt.
He stopped running and unsheathed the sword. As soon as he held it in his hands, the weight of the sword surprised him, causing him to almost drop it. He was trying to appraise it to see if it was good enough, when suddenly, a window appeared.
--------------------------------------
A blade powerful enough to pierce even the heavens.
ATK +1000
Bound to Zephyr Chronis
-----------------------------------------
Pierce the heavens? Does that mean that it’s strong enough to cut anything? Zephyr quickly looked around for something to cut. He found a chunk of stone, which was probably debris from all the shaking. He used all of his strength to swing the sword and cut the chunk of stone. After seeing the results, he let out a smile.
The chunk of rock was cleanly cut. The blade’s sharpness was no joke.
Zephyr turned around and faced the golem, which was still slowly approaching him.
“Come at me,” he said with a smile, as he used up almost all of his strength to lift the sword. He was going to move towards the golem, but the sword was too heavy for him to freely move while lifting it. Zephyr was pumped. This was the first time he had to face an enemy that posed a real threat towards him. Now that his magic’s gone, the world has become a dangerous place for him.
And also, the fact that he could grow stronger as he kept going made his blood boil in excitement.
The golem was now standing right in front of him. It raised its foot and was about to crush him, but before it could raise its foot fully, Zephyr swung the sword with all his might and threw it towards the golem.
The sword flung towards the golem’s torso. It wasn’t as fast as Zephyr hoped it would fly, but it still managed to push the golem back and make it collapse. A huge cloud of dust exploded as the golem fell on its back from the weight of the sword.
As the dust dissipated, the golem’s body became separated and all that remained were huge boulders, which used to be parts of the golem.
